Friday night, the varsity Cougar football opened their season with a 60-22 win over Jewett-Leon.

“I’m very proud of our boys,” Coach Brandon Hicks said. “We played a fantastic game.”

The Cougars jumped out to a large lead in the first quarter with touchdown passes from Zane Zeinert to Breon Lewis, Jordan Landrum and Moses Fox. Jewett-Leon was able to answer back with a touchdown of their own, but by the end of the first quarter it was clear that the RL Cougars were dominating the game even with the multiple penalties against them.

“We need to work on those mental penalties,” Coach Hicks said. “I’m okay with hustle penalties, but There were a few here and there that were a lack of mental focus and that’s to be expected in the first game of the season.”

Lack of mental focus aside, the Cougar defense dominated Leon by slowing the running game of Leon’s down to a crawl while the cornerbacks gave coverage enough to hold down the receivers.

Next Friday, the varsity Cougars will host the Wortham Bulldogs at Cougar Stadium in Travis. Game begins at 7:30pm.
