Jamarquis Johnson, a junior at Rosebud-Lott, jumped his way to a state title Friday at the state track meet in Austin.

Johnson went from fourth place after his fifth attempt to first place with his final jump of 23-6.25″.

Johnson was originally not placed to go to the state meet, having missed the wild card spot until the day before the meet. RL received the call that his jump qualified him to the wild card position and allowed him to attend and compete in the meet.

“It is just an amazing accomplishment what this young man was able to do,” said boys track coach Justin Bell. “On Wednesday, he isn’t even in the track meet, then 48 hours later he comes out here and has the best jump in the entire state and is a state champion. It says a lot about his mental toughness and what an incredible athlete he is.”
